Breakthrough in preventing nausea and vomiting

If you've had general anesthesia in the past, you may know how uncomfortable nausea and vomiting is. In fact, in a study conducted at Stanford University Medical Center, patients frequently ranked vomiting as the most undesirable outcome of anesthesia, even more undesirable than pain.

In the past, postoperative nausea and vomiting was difficult to treat. Various preventive and treatment medications included as Droperidol, Compazine, Zofran, and Scopolamine patches.

Now there's a new medication called EMEND that is available to us. EMEND works differently than other anti-nausea and anti-vomiting medications by focusing directly at the central pathway.

What's even more unique about EMEND is that it works for 48 hours on a single dose. Only one pill is needed at least one hour before surgery. This one dose alone provides superior prevention of nausea and vomiting than using Zofran, the current leading treatment.
