Skin health for the spring
February 21, 2007
What would you think about a coat that automatically repairs cuts, rips and burns, is waterproof, washable and guaranteed to last a lifetime? Look no further--you're wearing it! It's your skin, the largest organ in the body.
Your overall well-being
Your skin is the outward reflection of your overall health status. Internal disorders can actually show up on the outer layer of skin, the epidermis. For example, unhealthy hair, nails and skin can be a sign of protein and mineral deficiency in the diet. Broken capillaries on the face can be a sign of weak blood vessel elasticity which can be helped with vitamins C and K. Photodamaged skin is a sign that you've neglected to use sunscreen. Vitamins A, C, and E help fight this condition, along with AHA's (alpha hydroxyl acids).
Things you can do
Clearly, healthy skin starts with a healthy diet that has a good balance of vitamins and minerals. But did you know that your skin can also benefit from vitamins applied topically to your skin? When applied to your skin, free radical scavengers, such as Vitamin A and C, can actually help reduce the damage that causes premature aging.
Along with drinking lots of water, your skin also needs rich hydration from the outside, in the form of effective moisturizers that can plump up fine lines and wrinkles.
Stress can wreak havoc on our skin. Exercising regularly can help manage the stress levels in our life. Facials are very beneficial because they not only deep cleanse your skin, but also produce a sense of physiological well-being.
Personalize your regimen
It is important for skin care to be age-appropriate and person-specific. Every age group benefits from a skin care regimen that fits their stage of life. Every person should have their particular skin concerns addressed, be it sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, or dark spots on the skin. Take care of your skin today--your skin will thank you later!
