Eyelid Lift

Goals

  • Corrects excess skin, tissue, and fat that contribute to puffiness and bags in both the upper and lower eyelid
  • Helps to restore a more youthful and energetic appearance

Description

An eyelid lift (technically known as blepharoplasty) is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. An eyelid lift removes excess skin, eliminates bags and restores firmness to the area surrounding the eye, resulting in a more rested, energetic look. However, it won't remove crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.

Procedure

An eyelid lift can involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If all four eyelids are to be done, surgery is usually performed on the upper eyelids first, then the lower ones.

The incisions are placed along the natural lines of the eyelids. In the upper eyelids, the incision is made along the eyelid creases. In the lower eyelids, the incision is made either just below the lashes or from inside the lower eyelid. Often times, the incisions are extended into the crow's feet or laugh lines at the outer corners of the eyes. Working through these incisions, the skin is separated from the underlying fatty tissue and muscle, excess fat removed, and sagging skin and muscle trimmed. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures. After the eyelid lifts are complete, the area will be washed, special strips of taped are used to reinforce the sutures, and the eyes are lubricated with ointment.

Recovery

After the surgery, the eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off. This discomfort can be controlled with medication. The head should be elevated for several days, and the use of cold compresses will help reduce swelling and bruising. For the first few weeks, there may be excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and temporary changes in eyesight, such as blurring or double vision.

Sutures are removed 2 to 7 days after surgery. Once they are out, the swelling and discoloration around the eyes will gradually subside.

Most patients are able to read or watch television after two or three days, and are usually back to work or school in 3 to 5 days. Vigorous physical activity should be limited for several weeks, including jogging, bending, heavy housework, sex, or any activity that may increase blood pressure. Sunglasses and a special sunblock made for eyelids should be used because of sensitivity to sunlight, wind, and other irritants continue for several weeks.
