Brazilian Butt Lift
Increase fullness & roundness with a BBL
What is Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery?
Buttock Reshaping can mean different things to different people, but, simply put, it is about changing a flat butt to a more curvy, round shape. The process can also be called a “Brazilian Butt Lift”, “butt lift”, “buttock augmentation” or “gluteal augmentation” (the “glutes” are another word for the butt).
In general, you use liposuction to take fat away from areas where you don’t need it, to an area where you do need it, your buttock.
What are the benefits of a Brazilian butt lift surgery?
The goals of BBL surgery are to turn a “flat butt” into a butt that is:
- Rounder
- Curvier
- Gives an hourglass shape to the body
- Lifted appearance
- Larger, or appears larger
- More proportional to the rest of the body
- A side benefit is that fatty areas of your tummy, love handles, back rolls, or thighs can be reduced
How much does butt reshaping surgery cost?
The cost of buttock reshaping surgery can vary depending on how much and where the fat is coming from. Because each person is different, a consultation with our surgeon will include an assessment of your particular situation and recommendations on how you can best achieve your goals. After that, you will meet with our Cosmetic Coordinator to receive your quote.
Receiving financing is an important part of most people’s surgical plan. We are experts in getting you the financing you need.
How is a Brazilian butt lift performed?
A Brazilian butt lift can take 3 hours, sometimes more, depending on the situation.
Before the surgery, you and your surgeon will decide where to remove the fat, for example, from the tummy, love handles, back rolls and/or thighs.
The first thing the surgeon will do is to perform liposuction to remove fat from those areas. The harvested fat will then be processed in order to prepare it for putting it into the buttock. There are several ways to process the fat. You can discuss your surgeon’s preferred method.
The prepared fat will then be artistically put into your buttock, exactly where you need it. Buttock reshaping is a very sculptural and 3-dimensional process. Your surgeon will take time and care to make sure that your end result is as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
Afterwards, a special garment may be used to protect the areas that were operated on.
What does the recovery process look like for a Brazilian butt lift?
It is especially important for this surgery to be successful that you follow your surgeon’s exact after-surgery instructions. Continue to wear your garment as long as your surgeon says it’s necessary.
You may experience soreness in the areas that were liposuctioned and in the buttocks. This soreness should improve gradually. You may have leakage of fluid from the areas that were liposuctioned. This should decrease relatively quickly.
You should be able to be up and about by the next day, though initially you will be moving around slower than usual. Day by day, you will feel more like yourself. Do make sure that you walk around regularly to keep the blood flow circulating. Do not, however, do anything strenuous.
What are the common risks & complications?
Though uncommon, as with any surgery, buttock reshaping surgery can have risks.
Asymmetry
After surgery, there can be some differences between the left and right buttock. Sometimes, additional fat injection may help even this out.
Contour irregularities
Because the healing of the injected fat can vary, there may be lumps, bumps, areas of unevenness after the surgery. Much of this can improve with time so it is important to be patient and follow your surgeon’s instructions. If these irregularities are significant, additional fat injection may help.
Infection
Infection is rare but can sometimes occur after this surgery. Taking oral antibiotics or IV (into your veins) antibiotics is most commonly the treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What if, after the surgery, I feel like my butt is still not big enough?
A:A review of a little biology can be helpful here. The fat that is injected into the buttocks is a living entity. The fat can only survive if the fat cells get a good blood supply, which supplies the nutrients the cell needs. If the fat isn’t able to get a good blood supply, the fat will liquify and get absorbed by your body, Essentially, those fat cells will disappear.
Because every person is different, some people are able to keep more of the fat that was injected than others. It is normal and expected that after the swelling goes down and some of the fat liquifies, your buttocks will be and will look smaller.
It is important to remember that there is a limit to how much fat can be safely injected at one time into the buttocks and that limit will be different from person to person. Over-injecting the buttock to get an even larger buttock can lead to significant problems. Sometimes, a re-injection of additional fat may be necessary to get the buttock size or shape that you want.
Q: How much time is needed for a Brazilian butt lift?
A: Approximately 3 hours or so.
Q: Is buttock reshaping surgery an inpatient or outpatient surgery?
A: Outpatient.
Q: What are some common side effects?
A: Most of the side effects are temporary. For example, discomfort, swelling, numbness and bruising.
Q: What is the recovery time?
A: You will be doing light activity only for 2 weeks. After that, you may gradually increase your level of activity.
Q: What is recovery like? Is it painful?
A: Most patients say that the surgery was easier and less painful than expected. You will feel sore and discomfort, but any pain itself is usually quite mild. We recommend that, initially, you sit only with a specialized pillow. The special garment is worn 24/7 for the first 2 weeks, then time worn is gradually decreased. Your surgeon will guide your progress.

My overall surgery has been a terrific success. I couldn't be happier with my choice. Dr. Kim was right there for me day or night to help me through. Within thirty days, I was pretty much back to normal. Now, six months later, I can't even tell I had surgery, I feel completely natural.
