What is a labial reduction?
A labial reduction can also be known as a labiaplasty or labioplasty. It is a procedure that decreases the size of the labia so that it is more aesthetically and functionally appealing. Special care is taken to preserve the function of this area which is to protect the vaginal opening.
What are the benefits of a labial reduction?
Labial reduction surgery reduces the size of the labia minora so that activities that previously caused discomfort, such as intercourse and playing sports, become easier and less distressing.

How is surgery performed?
Labiaplasty surgery is often performed under general anesthesia but may also be done under local anesthesia. The labia will be recontoured so that they no longer excessively protrude. Utmost care is taken to remove as much tissue as needed, while still providing adequate protection for the vaginal opening. We also aim to preserve the normal appearance of the vaginal lips and to hide the scar in a location where it will be visually pleasing and least likely to cause functional problems. Scars in this area usually heal very well and are difficult to even see when fully healed. No loss of sensation or negative effect in intercourse are usually reported. On the contrary, most women report satisfaction with this procedure.
How is the recovery process?
You may wear a light sanitary pad after the surgery but soilage or bleeding after the surgery is rare. Ice packs will be applied to the area for the first several days. Initially, you may feel burning during urination and it is helpful to use a squirt bottle filled with lukewarm water to soothe the area while you urinate.
You can go back to your normal activities in a few days. Avoid irritation or rubbing of the area. You will want to avoid strenuous physical exercise for about 4 weeks. You can resume sexual intercourse after 6 weeks.
What are the common risks & complications?
Separation of the wound
While it is still healing, the wound can open up. This usually occurs if you have undertaken excessive physical exertion or rubbing of the area. Please follow your surgeon’s recommendations as to what activities you should and should not partake in. When treated with care, this area usually heals very well.
Scarring
As mentioned, the scar in the labia usually heals very well. In rare instances, scars can become painful to the touch or thickened. It is important to remember that the way you scar depends on your own genetic characteristics.
