Mommy Makeover
In-Depth Guide

Every year in our office, we see hundreds of women who are loving and proud mothers. As a result of having had children, their bodies have changed. Most often they point to their breasts and their tummies as areas that are no longer as pleasing to them as they used to be.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is tailored to your specific problem areas. For many women, it will be breast augmentation and tummy tuck. For others, they may need a breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction of the abdomen and hips. It’s all based on you.

If you’ve ever considered lifting or enlarging your breasts, taking out the hanging tummy skin or smoothing out some unwanted fat, then you should find out about a Mommy Makeover.

Breast surgery after pregnancy

Did you breastfeed your children? Undoubtedly, this is great for the babies but it can alter the appearance of the breasts afterwards. After stopping breastfeeding, the fullness of the breasts during breastfeeding is often quickly replaced by empty sacks of skin.

Even women who did not breastfeed can be dissatisfied with the way their breasts look: too small, too saggy or both.

There are several good options for improving the appearance of your breasts: breast augmentation, breast lift or doing a breast lift plus augmentation.

Body Contouring

Many women who have had their skin stretched out by carrying a baby (or several) will benefit from a tummy tuck ,which takes out the “hanging” stomach skin and fat. We often see women who are discouraged because despite diet and exercise, their “pooch” remains. This is the best scenario for surgery: when surgery does what you cannot do on your own.

Body contouring in the form of liposuction can also be added to smooth out your silhouette. The most common areas are the hips, waist area, “muffin tops”, thighs and back rolls.

What are the benefits of a Mommy Makeover?

The best thing to do is to come visit our office for a consultation so our surgeons can listen to your wishes and offer our suggestions. Every body is different and so are your personal desires. We will take the time to get to know you as an individual. This will help us deliver the very best results.

For most women, the thought of a “makeover” is a happy one. The results will bring you closer to achieving the look you desire.

How is a Mommy Makeover procedure performed?

After your consultation, the road to your Mommy Makeover procedure will continue with a complete preoperative visit. During this visit, your surgeon will tell you all the details of the procedure and take the time to answer any and all questions that you have. Detailed preoperative and postoperative instructions will be given so that you will know exactly what to expect.

On the day of surgery, you will arrive at the hospital or surgery center where you will be greeted by a caring and competent surgical team. Your surgeon will again meet with you, answer questions and go over the surgery.

The surgery can take anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on what procedures are performed. If breast surgery is performed, we take the time to sit you up (often several times) so that we can best shape the breasts into a pleasing form. If implants are used, we will use sizers that help the surgeon give optimal, precise results.

If you are getting a tummy tuck, we aim to make the incision as low as possible. Closing all incisions is done with care so that your scars will heal as well as possible.

Liposuction is performed using a tumescent technique that maximizes postoperative comfort and minimizes blood loss.

How is the recovery process?

Because we take a great deal of time to explain the process to you, you will find that your recovery is what you expected, or better. After having worried about it as everyone does, one patient even described her postoperative course as a “non-event”. Although not everyone will experience the same thing, it is certain that education and preparation are keys to a speedy recovery.

Everyone’s pain threshold is different. We make every effort to address your needs and keep our patients as comfortable as possible. The first week is the hardest. It is best to have someone help you during that time, especially if you have children that need your attention.

After that first week or so, most women find themselves getting back to feeling like their normal selves. Many people can go back to work after about three weeks, although it depends on what procedures were done, what type of work you are going back to and your individual recovery path.

What are the common risks & complications in a Mommy Makeover procedure?

Your safety and comfort are our greatest priorities. Thanks to modern advances in medicine and technology, having surgery is now safer than ever. We are always strive to improve the care and well being of our patients.

Fortunately, with appropriate precautions, complications are uncommon. Complications that do occur vary with the type of procedure performed. Your surgeon will go over these possible risks with you in detail. You will have the opportunity to have all of your questions answered.

Our aim is to make you feel informed, empowered and secure in your decision to have surgery with us.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How do I know if I need a breast augmentation or a breast lift?
A: This is a very good question that we encounter every day in our office. You can start by asking yourself, “Do I want my breasts to be the shape they are now, only bigger?”. If yes, then a breast augmentation may be all you need. Or, do you stand in front of the mirror and lift up on your breasts, wishing they were up higher? If so, then you might need a lift. The best thing is to make an appointment for a consultation so our surgeons can help you decide which surgery would best meet your needs.

Q: If I get a tummy tuck, do I need to get liposuction?
A: Liposuction works together with a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is very good at removing all the extra skin in the center of your tummy but it doesn’t take care of the hips and “muffin top” area. Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction usually creates the sleekest, smoothest look and a beautiful improvement in your torso area.

Q: Will I feel comfortable wearing a bathing suit again after I have surgery?
A: Many women who come to us for consultation feel very uncomfortable wearing a bathing suit. They may have been able to camouflage their problem areas when wearing every day clothes but a trip to the beach or pool makes them feel insecure and overexposed. They will laugh when asked if they ever wear a bikini. Over the years, we have witnessed dramatic improvements in self-confidence after a Mommy Makeover. Not only are they more confident in their clothes and intimate situations, but also in a bathing suit. Many patients have been extremely excited to tell us that they wore a bikini on vacation for the first time in years. Needless to say, this makes our day!
