Eyelid Surgery
In-Depth Guide

An Eyelid Lift is an excellent step because the recovery tends to be quick, virtually painless, with dramatic results.

What is an eyelid lift? (blepharoplasty)

An eyelid lift (technically known as blepharoplasty) is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. An eyelid lift removes excess skin, eliminates bags and restores firmness to the area surrounding the eye, resulting in a more rested, energetic look. However, it won’t remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.

The incisions are hidden within the natural crease of your eyelid so scars are minimal. The eyelid skin usually heals quickly and well.

What are the benefits of a blepharoplasty?

There are many benefits to eyelid lift surgery. An eyelid lift can:

  • Corrects excess skin, tissue, and fat that contribute to puffiness and bags in both the upper and lower eyelid
  • Helps to restore a more youthful and energetic appearance.

How much does an eyelid lift cost?

The cost of an eyelid lift depends on the extent of work that needs to be done. Often, an eyelid lift is done together with other procedures, such as a brow lift or face lift. We invite you to come in for a consultation with our surgeons who will advise you on the best procedure. Afterwards, you will meet with our Cosmetic Coordinator who will discuss the cost and different financing options. Please call us at 951-699-9201. We are always happy to hear from you.

How is a blepharoplasty surgery performed?

An eyelid lift can involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If all four eyelids are to be done, surgery is usually performed on the upper eyelids first, then the lower ones.

The incisions are placed along the natural lines of the eyelids. In the upper eyelids, the incision is made along the eyelid creases. In the lower eyelids, the incision is made either just below the lashes or from inside the lower eyelid. The incisions may be extended into the crow’s feet or laugh lines at the outer corners of the eyes. Working through these incisions, the skin is separated from the underlying fatty tissue and muscle. The sagging skin is removed. Depending on your anatomy, excess fat may also be removed. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures. After the eyelid lifts are complete, the area will be washed, special strips of tape are used to reinforce the sutures, and the eyes are lubricated with ointment.

What does the recovery process from an eyelid surgery look like?

Recovery after eyelid lift tends to be quick. The tissues usually heal rapidly. After the surgery, the eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off. This discomfort can be controlled with medication. The head should be elevated for several days, and the use of ice packs will help reduce swelling and bruising. Sometimes, you can produce excess tears or experience dryness of the eyes. You will be using eye drops regularly.

Most sutures are removed 5 to 7 days after surgery.

Most patients are able to read or watch television after a day or two and can be back to work in 3 to 5 days. Vigorous physical activity should be limited for several weeks, including jogging, bending, heavy housework, sex, or any activity that may increase blood pressure. Sunglasses should be used.

What are the risks and complications?

Eyelid lift surgery is relatively straightforward. But, as with any operation, there are risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with this procedure.

Bleeding

Excessive bleeding can occur, especially if your blood pressure rises after surgery. Rarely, another operation is needed to control the bleeding. We will go over with you what sort of activities to avoid so that your blood pressure does not excessively rise after surgery.

Asymmetry

Did you know that the left and right sides of your face are not exactly the same? This is part of what makes your face unique. Often one eyelid make be droopier than the other. Due to these differences preoperatively, there may be differences postoperatively. This is called asymmetry.
